Although the U.S. Air Force (USAF) previously lagged other services on BIM implementation, the Air Force’s BIM implementation has progressed at a rapid pace in the last six months. This session will focus on BIM implementation in the USAF, in conjunction with their recent CE Transformation and MILCON Centralization activities. Specifically, information and demonstrations will include the USAF transition from an "analog" approach in the existing Whole Building Design Guide (WBDG) online design criteria and specifications to a "digital" BIM-based approach. This new approach leverages databases and interoperable IFCs to generate dynamic prototypes of virtual building models to aid and sustain the facility lifecycle in support of the USAF mission worldwide. Benefits include automating the existing USAF programming process, AFH 32-1084 facility specifications, and in turn DD 1391s for billions of dollars of construction annually worldwide.
